Marcella Zimmerman (97) of Altamont

Marcella Zimmerman, 97, of Altamont, died at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Lutheran Care Center, Altamont.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 20, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church, Altamont with Pastor Gene Creek officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, Altamont. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Ballard Nature Center, Sean McCash Scholarship Fund or the donor’s choice. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Marcella I. Zimmerman was born on Monday, November 30, 1925 in rural Altamont to Arthur G. and Grace (Beccu) Klitzing. She married Albert W. Zimmerman on August 28, 1949 at the First United Methodist Church and he preceded her in death on June 10, 2020. She was a bookkeeper at Grobengieser Son’s Hardware store for many years, starting when she was in high school. She was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church, Altamont where she was a member of the United Methodist Women, sang in the choir and had been Sunday School superintendent. She was a member of the Effingham County Home Extension and had been Exhibition Hall superintendent at the Effingham County Fair. She was an avid traveler and along with Albert had visited all 50 states and several foreign countries. Marcella was very interested in preserving the family history and was keeper and curator of the family quilts.
She is survived by; her daughters, Alice (Ed) Dawkins, Louisville and Sue (Robert) Powley, Manchester, MO; grandchildren, Travis Powley, Anthony (Janessa) Dawkins, Rachel (Adam) Porter and Wesley (Hillary) Dawkins; and 14 great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by; her parents, brother, Harold (Evelyn) Klitzing; sister, Doris Klitzing as a child; and grandsons, Sean McCash and Tim Dawkins.
