James W. ‘Jim’ Brasel, 87, of St. Elmo, died at 11:05 p.m. Sunday, January 22, 2023 at his home.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 27, 2023 at the St. Elmo Christian Church with Jim Quick officiating. Burial will follow at Summit Prairie Cemetery, Salem, IL. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 26th at the church. Memorials may be made to Crossroads Cancer Center, Effingham, Shriners Hospital for Children, St. Elmo Christian Church or the donor’s choice. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jim was born on Tuesday, February 5, 1935 at home in Kinmundy, IL to Glen and Dola (Chasteen) Brasel. He married Nancy Deadmond on June 26, 1954 at the Kinmundy United Methodist Church. He retired from the St. Elmo School District where he was the head of maintenance. He was a member of the St. Elmo Christian Church, Kinmundy Masonic Lodge #398 where he was a 32o Mason. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, mowing the lawn and most importantly his grandkids.

He is survived by his wife of over 68 years of marriage, Nancy of St. Elmo; sons, Robert ‘Bob’ (Sherry) Brasel of Farina and Brad (Julie) Brasel of Shobonier; daughter, Barbara (Eric) Grobengieser of Altamont; sisters, Nellie Hiestand of Salem, Clara Deadmond of Altamont and Linda (Maurice) Robb of Kinmundy; 9 grandchildren, Kendall (Rob) Bergman, Justin (Jessica) Brasel, Klayton (Micah) Brasel, Kelcie (Ryan) Sundburg, Casey (Ethan) Welcher, Cody (Emily) Logan, Amy (Jason) Rippetoe, Anthony (Jessica) Grobengieser, and Adam (Jennifer) Grobengieser; 17 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Denton Brasel, brothers-in-law, Sam Hiestand and Dick Deadmond.
