James Donal "Jim" Calhoon (89) formerly of Effingham

James (Jim) Donal Calhoon passed away on January 2, 2023.

He was born on October 28, 1933, in Seminole, OK, to James G. Calhoon and Alice Belle (Carlile) Calhoon. He married Sharon Kay (Hickman) Calhoon on March 30, 1957, and was a long time resident of Effingham, IL, before moving to Vero Beach, FL. in 2003. He graduated from Carmi High School in 1951 and the University of Illinois in 1955. He was a Registered Professional Engineer and a member of the National and Illinois Societies of Professional Engineering and served as the chairman of the Illinois Association of Highway Engineers. He spent 35 years as a civil engineer with the Illinois Department of Transportation. Upon his retirement from IDOT he spent many years running a private engineering consulting firm. He was a veteran, participating in ROTC during college and subsequently attaining the rank of Captain in the US Army Reserve. He was a member of Effingham Elks Lodge #1016 and the Effingham Rotary Club and served on the Effingham City Council from 1979 to 1987. After moving to Florida he was active in the Village Green community, participating in many activities including horseshoes, darts and shuffleboard as well as serving the Florida Mobile Home Association.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sharon Kay Calhoon and his children James R. Calhoon of Effingham; Cindy (Steve) Salis of Vero Beach, FL; Shari Bennett of Lynchburg, VA; and Lynn (Tom) Luetkemeyer of Fayetteville, AR; and also by his grandchildren Nicole (Joey) Trupiano; Jennifer (Neil) Ruholl; Emily (Max) Konrad; Jacob and Matthew Salis; Megan and Maggie Luetkemeyer; Christina, Lindsay and Andrew Bennett and Kelly York; and great grandchildren Joey, Susy and James Trupiano; Ava, Elle, Faith and Mila Ruholl; Leo and Augie Konrad and Michael York.

He was predeceased by his father James G. Calhoon, mother Alice Belle Calhoon, and brother Arthur Ray Calhoon.
