Howard Koester, 87, of Brownstown, died at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at Taylorville Memorial Hospital, Taylorville, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 31, 2022 at Liberty Christian Church, Brownstown, with Rev. Clayton Richison officiating. Burial will follow at Liberty Cemetery with military rites by VFW Post #9770, Brownstown and Crawford-Hale American Legion Post #95, Vandalia. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Memorials may be made to Liberty Cemetery or the donor’s choice. Gieseking Funeral Home, Brownstown is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
Howard Dale Koester was born on Sunday, September 15, 1935 in Sefton Township, rural Brownstown to Harold H. and Ethel (Grandfield) Koester. In 1958, he joined and served honorably in the U.S. Army. He married Carol Sue Compton on April 16, 1961 and they enjoyed over 57 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on March 24, 2019. He was a life-long farmer and member of Liberty Christian Church. As a younger man he enjoyed softball and in his later years enjoyed watching nature, especially the local activity of deer.
He is survived by; his daughters, Karen (Scott) Torbeck of St. Peter and Amy (Timothy) Hoesli of Taylorville; son-in-law, Sorin Ignat of Richton Park; 4 Grandchildren, Travis (Amanda) Torbeck, Erika (Brian) Smith, Cheyenne Hoesli and Regan Hoesli and great grandson, Jase Torbeck.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter, Paula Ignat, grandson, Tim Torbeck and sister, Erma (Virgil) Strobel.
