William E. Byars, 82, of Altamont, died at 10:20 a.m. Sunday, September 18, 2022 at Lakeland Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, Effingham, IL

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at the First Baptist Church, Altamont with Pastor Bill Weaver officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to service time at the church. A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Shady Grove Cemetery, Fayette, AL with Pastor Bill Weaver officiating. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Altamont or Gideons International. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont, is assisting the family with arrangements.

William Earl Byars was born on Sunday, April 28, 1940 in Fayette County, Alabama, to Furman Hill and Ella Mae (Pinkerton) Byars. He married Glendine Giles on May 19, 1961. He later married Nancy Ann Voelker on June 4, 1982 in Dallas, TX and she preceded him in death on March 2, 2021. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Altamont.

William started working at a young age and his places of employment included the Mobile Press Register, First National Bank, Mobile, International Paper, Home Furniture, Dallas, Capital Wire, Plano, TX, and he retired from Country Wide Financial, Dallas, where he served as the data center manager. He was a director and served as “The Enforcer” for the Federation of NCR Users Groups, a member of Gideons International, and appeared in an episode of "Walker: Texas Ranger." William loved basketball and family was very important to him.

He is survived by his daughter, Lynne Brody and her husband Stephan of Dallas, TX; grandson, Travis Aaron Brody of Dallas, TX, brother, Joe Hill (Mary) Byars, LaMirada, CA, half-brother, Harry Maxwell, Montgomery, AL, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ronald and Elsie Voelker of Mason and many nieces and nephews.
