Fred J. Meyer (89) of Teutopolis

Fred J. Meyer, 89, passed away at 9:50 p.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, surrounded by his loving family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 12, 2022 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis with burial in St. Francis Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the church. Memorial donations may be given to the St. Francis Church. Bauer Funeral Home in Teutopolis is assisting.

Fred was born February 9, 1933 in Green Creek, the son of John and Theresa (Waldhoff) Meyer. He graduated in 1951 from Teutopolis High School. As a freshman, he whistled at the love of his life, Marilyn E. Fuelle, and she became his wife on November 24, 1955. Marilyn preceded him in death on February 14, 2022. 

Fred joined the United States Navy in 1951 and was stationed on the USS Boxer - C21 in the engine room. He proudly served in the Korean War and survived a fire on board in the hostile waters off the coast of Korea.  After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Fred went to Bailey Tech School in St. Louis, Missouri. He began his working career at White Westinghouse in Peoria and then Effingham Regrinding. Fred went on to work as a diesel mechanic at Effingham Truck Sales, retiring after 40 years. He enjoyed John Deere tractors, NASCAR Racing, was a fan of Ford Motors and attending tractor pulls. Fred loved and supported his family with all their dreams.

Fred is survived by his son, David (Margie) Meyer of Teutopolis; daughters, Ellen (John) Howell of Pinckneyville and Lynne (Tony Nelson) Spalding of Teutopolis; sisters, Annie (Virgil) Kingery of Effingham and Lucille (Larry) Buehnerkempe of Teutopolis; sisters-in-law, Sue Hoelscher of Effingham, Sheila Fuelle of Teutopolis, Joanie Meyer of Sigel and Joyce Koeberlein of Teutopolis; brother-in-law, James (Maryanne) Fuelle of Terre Haute, IN; grandchildren, Marcia (Scott) Niebrugge, Mary Jo (Ed) Kreke, Michael (Ashlee) Howell, Melissa (Mike) Higgerson, Mark (Katie) Howell, Bailey (Jerrod) Estes; great-grandchildren, Max, Zac, Bryce, Brett, Jason, Lily, Kinlee, Kase, Parker, Jackson, Milo, Branden, Kaiden, Carter, Jonah and Quinn.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn; son-in-law, Dave Spalding; great-grandchildren, Dalton Howell and Laney Jo Niebrugge; sisters, Theresa Mae (“Butch”) Meinhart and Catherine (Harold “Foz”) Thoele; brothers, Lawrence (Eileen) Meyer, John Meyer Jr., Louie (Annie) Meyer, Gene (Jeanie) Meyer, Jim Meyer and Gerry (Susie) Meyer; brothers-in-law, John “Jack” Fuelle and Frank Hoelscher.
