Evelyn Lue Roan, 78, of Hidalgo, Illinois. Evelyn went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 27, 2022, in the early morning at her daughter’s home in Newton, IL after a lengthy battle with dementia.
Evelyn was born to Leona and Noble Grissom on October 14, 1943, in Casey, IL. During her years at Casey High School, she graduated at the top of her class and met her future husband, William Roan. William and Evelyn’s romance was sustained by writing each other letters during his time serving in the Air Force. Upon William’s return to Hidalgo, Illinois the two were wed on June 4, 1961. Shortly thereafter, Evelyn and William were joined by their two daughters Lori and Lisa. Always active in the church, Evelyn frequently led Sunday school, enjoyed spending her summers ministering at youth camp and Bible school. In her later years, would frequently travel to East St. Louis on mission trips. She loved cheering on her grandchildren whether it be band, athletics or at their graduations. In her free time, she was always on the hunt for her next antique purchase and was an avid gardener and bowler. She was also active in the community as a 4H Leader, a Hidalgo Election Board member, a Newton Eagles Marching Band booster, a Home Extension member, and a Rosehill Household Science Club member. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Greenup.
She was preceded in death by her husband William, mother Leona, father Noble, and siblings Etta Mae, Maurice Ray, Dorothy Jean Ring, Juanita McBride, Tommy Grissom, and Kay Hunsaker.
She loved hosting her family, especially for holidays, and is survived by her daughters Lori (David) Gramelspacher and Lisa (Anthony) Richards, grandchildren Aaron Gramelspacher, Levi Richards, Aubrey Richards, and Ariel (Cameron) Richards-Mertz, great-grandchildren Ava and Alyvia Gramelspacher, and siblings June McCullough, Richard Grissom, Shirley Fields, and Elizabeth Novak.
To honor Evelyn’s memory, we are holding a celebration of her life with a visitation on Thursday, June 30, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00pm at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup, IL.
