Joyce was born on March 7, 1935, in Effingham, IL, the daughter of Henry Lee and Irene (Melson) McCallen. She married Richard Cameron on April 12, 1953 at the First Baptist Church in Effingham and he preceded her in death on May 25, 2021. Joyce worked at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital for over 20 years as a ward clerk. Joyce and Richard owned and operated the R and J Ceramic Shop in southern Effingham County. She and Richard loved to do ceramics (when the trend was hot) and produced many sculptures which are probably still in many homes in the area. Joyce was active in the Crossroads Quilters Guild and Project Linus. In 2017, she was honored in the Effingham Daily News “Angels Among Us” program. Her only comment was, “God put me on Earth to help others. I just want to share what I make with others.” She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She loved her visits from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Joyce is survived by her children, David (Louise) Cameron of Heyworth, Peggy (Tony) Lister of Salem, Dale (Pam) Cameron of Battle Lake, MN, Gary (Nancy, deceased) Cameron of Effingham, Jerry Cameron of Effingham, and Paul Cameron and dog Zoe of Little Rock, AR; 9 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Jerry McCallen of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Marsha (Jim) Jones of Terre Haute, IN, Mary Williams of Terre Haute, IN, and Cheryl (Bruce) Grunloh of Effingham; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; daughter-in-law, Nancy (Stumborg) Cameron; and siblings, Avery McCallen, Virgil McCallen, Camilla Reed, Shirley Faircloth, and Ila Dammerman.
