Nadine (Sperandio) Brumleve (90) of Teutopolis

Nadine A. (Sperandio) Brumleve, 90, of Teutopolis, Illinois passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, April 2, 2022 surrounded by her family.     

The visitation will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis on Friday, April 8, 2022 from 9:30 to 11:00 AM followed by a mass at 11:00 AM. Following the mass, the inurnment will take place in the columbarium at St. Francis Cemetery in Teutopolis. In lieu of flowers, the family hopes you will consider making a donation to any of the following organizations in Nadine’s name: the Teutopolis Meals on Wheels Program; St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church or The National Kidney Foundation. 

Nadine was born on July 22, 1931 in Glen Carbon, Illinois the daughter of Joseph and Kathryn (Donna) Sperandio. Nadine was a 1949 graduate of Edwardsville High School and then received her Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Corrections from Eastern Illinois University in 1953. She began her teaching career in Moweaqua, Illinois followed by teaching positions in the Stonington and Glenview School Districts. While attending Homecoming at EIU in 1955, Nadine reconnected with EIU classmate Donald Brumleve, who became the love of her life, and they were then married on August 4, 1956.   

Over a 36-year career in education, Nadine continued teaching in the Venice and Plainfield, Illinois school districts before she and her family moved to Teutopolis in 1970, where her husband Don accepted the position as the first lay Principal at Teutopolis High School. Nadine also taught in the Teutopolis and Altamont School Districts before finally retiring from teaching in 1989.   

Nadine was a long-time member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Francis #1711 in Teutopolis; a member of the St. Francis of Assisi C.C.W in Teutopolis; the Effingham County Association for Home and Community Education (T.H.E. Unit); and the Effingham County Retired Teachers Association. Nadine enjoyed volunteering for many years at the Monastery Museum in Teutopolis. Nadine and Don were also inaugural volunteers for the two well-known programs in Effingham County: the Meals on Wheels Program in Teutopolis and The Cross at the Crossroads in Effingham. During her life, Nadine loved to garden, sew and travel. She and Don were proud “Winter Texans” and for over 20 years during their retirement, escaped the winter months in Illinois and traveled to their home on Lake LBJ in the beautiful Hill Country of Central Texas.   

Nadine is survived by her daughter Christina (John) Mette of Teutopolis; son Kurt Brumleve of Teutopolis and daughter Erica Brumleve (Jon Matousek) of Austin, Texas.  Nadine also has two grandsons; Greg (Mindy) Mette of Kennesaw, Georgia and Todd (Allison) Mette of Urbana, Illinois; two step-granddaughters, Cassidy Matousek of Bellevue, Washington and Rylee Matousek of Austin, Texas.  Nadine was blessed to have become a Great-Grandma to twins Jackson and Elle Mette.   

Nadine is also survived by her brothers, Joseph Sperandio of Houston, Texas and Neil (Sue) Sperandio of Titusville, Florida; her brother-in-law, Richard (Linda) Brumleve of Abingdon, Virginia and numerous nieces and nephews. In 2020, Nadine was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Don. She was also preceded in death by her sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Sperandio and Elizabeth Romaine Brumleve.  

The family would like to send a special thanks to Judy French, for her care and compassion as she assisted as a part-time, home caregiver for Don and Nadine during the past five years and to the wonderful staff at DaVita Dialysis in Effingham for the kindness shown to our Mom.
