Elizabeth M. Kasten of Brownstown was called to heaven on Thursday, February 3, 2022 at 8:30 p.m. after 85 years filled with family and friends who loved her dearly. We are comforted to know that she is rejoicing with her loved ones in heaven and will be watching and guiding those of us who will see her again someday.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 12, 2022 at Liberty Christian Church, rural Brownstown with Linda Dippold officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, rural Brownstown. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Memorials may be made to Mt. Carmel Cemetery or Mt. Carmel Church, Brownstown. Gieseking Funeral Home, Brownstown is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

CDC and IDPH guidelines with regard to COVID-19 must be followed. This includes, but is not limited to, face covering and social distancing.

Elizabeth Margaret was born on Tuesday, April 14, 1936 in Sefton Township, rural Brownstown, IL to John G. and Mary (Hobbs) Behrends. She was the little sister to 3 doting, teasing, older brothers who loved her completely. She married Richard Hugh Kasten on August 4, 1963 in Brownstown and they enjoyed over 48 years of marriage together until his death on May 13, 2012. They raised two children together, Cindy and Greg, in Edwardsville, Illinois. She was a high school teacher for the Westville, Carlinville, and Edwardsville school districts where she touched and guided many students through her compassionate and wise grace. Elizabeth also taught at S.I.U. at Edwardsville. She was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, rural Brownstown. She was an active volunteer and enjoyed membership in; Illinois Education Association, Fayette County Home Extension, Golden Years Club and Food Pantry, Haley Chapel quilter’s group, Brownstown Library, and the Gift Shop at Sarah Bush Lincoln Fayette County Hospital.

She is survived by: her daughter, Cynthia (Bob) Blair of Ooltewah, TN; her son, Gregory (Angelina) Kasten of Baton Rouge, LA; 4 grandchildren, Mary Beth (Andrew) Mondul of North Aurora, IL; Rebecca (Jimmy) Foley of Edgefield SC; Stone Kasten of New Orleans, LA and Reid Kasten of Baton Rouge, LA; great grandson, Hugh David Mondul; sisters-in law Shirley and Sally Behrends of Brownstown; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, and husband.
