Charles D. Heitman, 93, of Effingham, IL, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior early Friday morning, February 4, 2022, at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Effingham.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 11, 2022 at Faith Lutheran Church in Shumway with Pastor Jerry Bagwell officiating. Burial will be in the Faith Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday prior to the service at the church. Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Salvation Army of Mattoon. Condolences may be left online by clicking here

Charles was born December 15, 1928, in Effingham County, IL, the son of Fred and Clara Heitman. He married Norma Chesnut on May 3, 1952 at the St. Paul’s Evangelical Church in Clay County. She preceded him in death on March 26, 2014. Charles served in the Korean Conflict in Japan where he developed a love for pinochle. He spent his working years as a mechanic at various locations before retiring from Miles Nissan in Decatur. He was a member of the Salvation Army Church in Mattoon where he taught Adult Sunday School for several years and enjoyed working with the youth. After retirement his pastime was woodworking. He was always ready to lend a hand if you needed it and always ready for a game of pinochle.

Survivors include his daughter Joan (Jerry) Eirhart of Shumway and his son Neal (Kathy) Heitman of Normal, IL; grandchildren, Matthew (Eva) Suzewitz of Africa and Amanda Suzewitz of Mesa, AZ; great-grandchildren, Christian Suzewitz, Wyatt Rahn, Isabel Suzewitz, Lily Asburry, Victoria Suzewitz, and Hudson Suzewitz-Aucker; one brother Albert of Palm Bay, Florida; one sister Mardell (Kent) Harris Macomb, IL; and sister-in-law Marjorie Chesnut of Mattoon.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Sonya and her husband Randy Suzewitz; son-in-law Howard Hankins; four grandchildren; one sister Rosalie Kemper; brothersin-law Loren Dee Chesnut, Harold Naber, and Walter Kemper; and sisters-in-law Mildred Naber and Theda Heitmann.
