Bernard (Bernie) Bergfeld, 79, of Teutopolis, Illinois passed away Monday, January 31, 2022 at his home.

Bernie, the son of Raymond and Elizabeth (Doedtman) Bergfeld, was born on April 27, 1942. He married Deloris Haarman on May 5, 1962 at St. Joseph’s Church in Island Grove. They shared 59 years together and raised 5 kids Carla, Gary, Amy, Tom, and Kathy.

Bernie was a man of great integrity, who could light up any room with his loud, contagious laugh and great smile. He didn’t know a stranger. He was a dairy farmer for 39 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and taking care of all his dogs. He loved John Deere tractors and loved to paint everything green and yellow.

He is survived by his wife, Deloris, sons, Gary (wife Elaine) of Teutopolis and Tom of Shiloh, daughters, Carla Nosbich (husband Lyle) of Teutopolis, Amy Meinhart (husband Brad) of Effingham, and Kathy Miller of Belleville. Grandchildren: Derek (Maci) Meinhart, Brittany Goeckner, Mitch (Lynae) Meinhart, Wyatt Goeckner, Abbey Meinhart, Justin Miller, Lauren and Jake Bergfeld. Step grandchildren: Chad Nosbich, Nikki (Mitch) Lustig, and Mitch (Shelby) Nosbich. Great grandchildren: Quincy, Will, and Elise Meinhart. Step great grandchildren: Beau and Evy Nosbich, Hutch, Sylvie and Duke Lustig, Ryerson and Maverick Nosbich. Siblings: brother, Don (wife Linda) Bergfeld of Teutopolis, sisters, Marian (husband Harold) Kaufman of Effingham, Joyce (husband John) Meyer of Teutopolis, and Margie Mette of Teutopolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Betty Bergfeld, nephew, Brian Kaufman, niece, Susan Kaufman, and brother-in-law, Paul Mette.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 7, 2022 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lillyville. A rosary will be held at 4:00 p.m. with visitation to follow until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, February 6, 2022 at the church. Arrangements are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham, IL.

Per Bernie’s wishes, he will be cremated after the services and burial will be at later date at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery in Lillyville.
