Mark Edward Mitchell, 56, of Effingham, Illinois passed away on Friday, January 28, 2022.

Mark was born the son of Ed and Kaye Mitchell on April 10, 1965, in Pittsfield, Illinois. He graduated from Newton Community High School in 1983 and Eastern Illinois University in 1987 with a B.S. degree in Industrial Technology. He married his high school sweetheart, Gidget Kerner, on January 30, 1988; they shared 34 years of marriage and raised three daughters together. Mark spent most of his career in engineering design, testing, and contracting services. He was a successful small business owner of KAM Services, an environmental contracting service in Mattoon, Illinois since 2015, and H20 Sprinklers, a lawn irrigation service in Effingham, Illinois since 1997. Mark enjoyed spending time with his family and young grandchildren, hunting, golfing, and watching sports. He was the ultimate “handy man” and always willing to help others with his skills in carpentry, electricity, mechanics, and technology. If he didn’t know how to fix it, it was a guarantee he would research and figure it out. Mark was a man of faith and enjoyed attending worship services at Christ Church.

Mark is survived by his wife, Gidget Mitchell of Effingham, Illinois and his three daughters; Michaela (Cody) Esch of St. Louis, Missouri, MaKenzie (Trevor) Byram of Terre Haute, Indiana, and Madeline Mitchell of Louisville, Kentucky. His mother, Kaye Mitchell of Newton, Illinois. His sister, Kimberly (Michael) Keller of Carmel, Indiana, and his brother, Matthew (Sandra) Mitchell of Newton, Illinois. His mother-in-law, Connie Kerner of Newton, Illinois, and his father-in-law Jim Kerner of Newton, Illinois. His sister in-law, Cassie (Darrin) Campton of Dieterich, Illinois, and brother-in-law, Jay (Julie) Kerner of Teutopolis, Illinois. Three grandchildren will cherish his memory; Crew Esch of St. Louis, Missouri, and Bexley and Bruin Byram of Terre Haute, Indiana. In addition, he leaves many special nieces and nephews; Meridith (Matt) Oliver, Mitchell Keller, Clayton (fiancée Nikki Miah) and Callaway Campton, Drew and Paige Kerner, Mabry and Sienna Mitchell.

He is preceded in death by his father, Ed Mitchell, and his grandparents, Clyde and Marie Mitchell, and Loren and Marie Kibler.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham, Illinois. Funeral Services will directly follow and begin at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Effingham, Illinois.
