Matilda K. “Tillie” Schmidt, 98 of Effingham, passed away Friday, July 16, 2021 at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with her daughters by her side.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 19, 2021 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham. Memorial donations may be given to the charity of the donor’s choice. Tillie was born June 25, 1923 in Lillyville, the daughter of William and Cecilia (Swingler) Althoff. She married Clarence J. Schmidt on April 27, 1946 and he preceded her in death in 1982. Tillie was a member of St. Anthony Church in Effingham, the St. Anthony Council of Catholic Women and served many years as a cook for Sacred Heart School and St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham. She enjoyed quilting, playing cards and baking cookies.

Tillie is survived by her daughters, Jean (Don) Klingler of Newton and Joyce (Mark) Roedl of Teutopolis; 12 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Don; daughter, Judy Newberry; grandson, Bradley Schmidt; brothers, Walter, Albert, Carl, Harold and William “Bill” Althoff; sisters, Mary Ann Mette, Helen Althoff and Esther Worman.
