This obituary was submitted to the funeral home by the family.

Our father, Douglas Bishop, 71, of Mason Illinois, passed away on Thursday evening, July 8, 2021 at HSHS St Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

He was born on March 5, 1950, in Dover, Delaware, the first of four children of George and Mary (Fleming) Bishop. While in high school he became a member of the Volunteer Fire Company in Cheswold, Delaware. He graduated from Dover High School in 1968 and worked at the Dover Power Plant followed by several other jobs before joining Diversified Metal Corporation Dismantling Division in December 1969 which put him on the road to the rest of life. It was on his travels he met Brenda Kay Davis. They were married in Muskogee, Oklahoma on June 1, 1972 and moved to Effingham before finally settling in Mason, Illinois and raising four children. After driving a truck, Dad worked at World Color Press for over 20 years. Following the closure of the plant he worked briefly at Kohl’s and then returned to driving a truck before retiring. Dad’s interests included playing music, fishing, shooting and HAM Radio. He was a long-time member of the local amateur radio club. His interest in HAM radio led him to become a volunteer with the Effingham County Emergency Management Agency. Throughout his life Dad loved reading books about science fiction, westerns and politics. His collection of books will take some time to clear.

As per our father’s wishes, he will be cremated. A celebration of his life will be held on August 14th at the American Legion in Teutopolis, Illinois at noon. Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham is assisting our family with arrangements. You may share online condolences by clicking here.
