George Gregory “Greg” Cornell (65) of Watson

George Gregory “Greg” Cornell of Watson, IL, passed away surrounded by his family, Friday, June 25, 2021 at the age of 65.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Burial will be in Watson Cemetery in Watson. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Greg was born on April 9, 1956, in Effingham, IL, the son of George F. and Rebecca J. “Becky” (Waugh) Cornell. Greg graduated from Effingham High School in 1974. He married Vivica “Dedo” Eirhart on February 14, 1976. Together they had two sons, Aric and Adam. He worked as an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic for the last 30 years.

Greg was a devoted husband, dad, and grandfather. He enjoyed woodworking and being the family mechanic. His favorite pastime involved laughing over slap-stick humor with his family and especially his grandchildren. Greg had an infectious laugh that brought joy to the hearts of all that heard it. He also was an avid NASCAR fan. Greg traveled a lot for work, so he loved to be home during his down time. His favorite vacation spot was Holden Beach, NC, where he and his family spent many memorable beach adventures.

Greg is survived by his wife, Vivica “Dedo” Cornell of Watson; children, Aric (Amy) Cornell of Effingham and Adam (Lisa) Cornell of Watson; grandchildren Kierstin Cornell, Sean Mahaffey, and Reagan Cornell; mother, Rebecca “Becky” Cornell of Effingham; siblings, Gary (Lisa) Cornell of Effingham, Mark (Anita) Cornell of Effingham, Jane Cornell (Kent Schmidt) of Dieterich, Rita (James) Arnold of Watson, James (Lorena) Cornell of Texas, Angela Cornell of Michigan, and Wayne (Julie) Cornell of Effingham; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.
