Jerry Don Hargis, age 83, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 3:45 PM - Sunday, March 14, 2021, at Kindred Hospital in Peoria, Illinois.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM – Thursday, March 18, 2021, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, Illinois, with Fr. Dean Probst celebrating mass. Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Newton, Illinois. Visitation will be held 4:00-7:00 PM – Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at the funeral home. There will also be visitation from 10:00-10:30 AM – Thursday, March 18, 2021, at the church prior to the mass. In loving memory of Jerry, memorials may be made to the Jasper County Cancer Fund. Jerry was born on July 25, 1937, in rural Willow Hill, Illinois, the son of Rexil and Zola (Blaco) Hargis. He married Yvonne Schafer on September 12, 1959, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, Illinois.
Jerry had been a carpenter and a painter. For several years he owned and operated Jerry’s Body Shop and later worked at Heartland Classics in Newton, Illinois.
Jerry was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, Illinois, and the Knights of Columbus #1704. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, camping, tinkering and restoring John Deere tractors.

Wife of 61 years – Yvonne Hargis of Newton, Illinois
Children – Janet (David) Vahling of Newton, Illinois; Steve (Carolyn) Hargis of Newton, Illinois; Connie (Michael) Frohning of Ingraham, Illinois; and Sandy (Scott) Buerster of Ingraham, Illinois
Grandchildren – Jeremy (Jamie) Vahling, Christopher (Kristen) Vahling, Jeffrey (Diana) Vahling, Mathew (Erin) Frohning, Jonathan (Kelly) Frohning, Tyler (Emily) Frohning, Ashley (Kevin) Pipher, Justin Buerster, Jordan (Alex) Buerster, Travis (Lindsay) Buerster and Trenton (Natasha) Buerster
Great Grandchildren – Tyler, Caleb, Mitchell, Adrianne, Olivia, Ryan, Austin, Jenny, Mallory, Dalton, Logan, Kendall, Hadley, Connor, Myah and one on the way

Brother – Gene (Doris) Hargis of Willow Hill, Illinois
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Jeremy Vahling, infant brother and his father and mother-in-law Elmer and Florence Schafer.
