Leonard Robert Weishaar (91) of Island Grove

Leonard Robert Weishaar, age 91, of Island Grove, Illinois, passed away at 8:28 AM Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, Illinois.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 5, 2020, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Island Grove, Illinois with Father Frank Anthony Folino, OFM celebrating mass. Burial will follow mass in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Island Grove, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 8:45 to 9:45 AM Saturday, September 5, 2020 at the St. Joseph Parish Center. Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church or to Catholic Charities. Leonard was born on December 19, 1928, in Island Grove, Illinois, the son of Leo S. and Catherine (Habing) Weishaar. He proudly attended Teutopolis High School for 3 years and graduated from Newton Community High School with the class of 1946. Leonard married Marylene Ries on June 28, 1952, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham, Illinois. 

Leonard farmed to provide for his family but his true joy was found in construction, working as a carpenter, and roasting hogs for his friends and family. He enjoyed golfing, playing cribbage, fishing, hunting mushrooms and was an avid baseball fan, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. 

Leonard was a member of the St. Isidore Parish – St. Joseph Catholic Church, Effingham Elks Lodge #1016, Effingham Knights of Columbus Council #665 and an honorary member of the Cumberland County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4598 in Greenup, Illinois.

Wife of 68 years - Marylene Weishaar of Island Grove, Illinois

5 Children - JoAnn and Danny “Boone” Morrison of Wrights Corner, Illinois; David and Diana Weishaar of Paducah, Kentucky; Jeff and Brenda Weishaar of Island Grove, Illinois; Sandy and Gary Dean Morrison of Wrights Corner Illinois and Levi Weishaar of Effingham, Illinois

8 Grandchildren and 8 Great-grandchildren with another due in March

2 Sisters - Jane Emmerich of Effingham, Illinois and Mary Westfall of Watson, Illinois

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, brother Vincent Weishaar, sister Bernice Fehrenbacher and infant brother David Paul Weishaar, brothers-in-law John Westfall and Don Emmerich.
