Melba Pauline “Polly” Winterrowd, 85, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at Lavender Ridge in Effingham.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park in Newton. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. Polly was born on October 26, 1934, in Effingham County, IL, the daughter of Marvin and Laura Bernice (Walls) Klein. She married James G. Vail in January 1953 and to this union four children were born. She later married Richard Winterrowd on December 18, 1965, and he preceded her in death on September 20, 2019.

Polly worked at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Effingham for 47 years and held multiple positions. She enjoyed playing cards, going camping, tending to her flowers, and sitting outside.

Polly is survived by her children, Stanley (Deanna) Vail of Jackson, MS, Debra (Carl) Waggle of Claremont, Kathleen Davidson of Effingham, and Patricia (Gerald) Weaver of Oblong; 12 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild; siblings, Leonard (Fran) Klein of Homosassa, FL, Clifford (Mary) Klein, James (Carol) Klein, Charles (Sheila, deceased) Klein, Thomas (Brenda) Klein, and Doris (Herb, deceased) Jones all of Effingham, Patricia (Leon) Wohltman of Texas, and Margie (Leon, deceased) Fulk of Effingham.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard Winterrowd; and sister, Rita (Ron) Short.
