William E. “Bill” Swingler Sr., 76 of Teutopolis, passed away at home Tuesday, July 14, 2020, surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 18, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lillyville with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham. Memorial donations may be given to HSHS Hospice. 

Bill was born October 6, 1943 in Effingham, the son of Clarence and Bernadine (Hartke) Swingler. He married Alice Niebrugge, the daughter of Adolph and Genevieve (Probst) Niebrugge of Green Creek, 54 years ago on August 21, 1965. He grew up in Lillyville and later served 6 years in the Illinois National Guard. Bill was engaged in farming and retired from Direct Lines Trucking as a truck driver after 20 years. After retirement, Bill spent his mornings working at Menards and his afternoons and evenings were filled with fishing, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and spending time with his family. Bill also enjoyed his annual lighting of his Christmas lights. Bill was a member of Sacred Heart Lillyville Men’s Sodality, Teutopolis Knights of Columbus and the Lions Club “Deck the Hall of Fame”. He enjoyed tractor pulls, fishing and gardening.

Bill is survived by his wife, Alice; children, Donna (Rick) Hartke of Dieterich, Deb (Jeff) Magee of Teutopolis, Cindy (Jeff) Hardiek of Teutopolis, Vickie (Travis) Riddle of Highlands Ranch, CO, Bill (Ann) Swingler Jr. of Lillyville, Amy (Ryan) Hoelscher of Teutopolis and Chris (Jelie) Swingler of LaVerne, TN; grandchildren, Megan (Jack) Looman, Cole Hartke, Taylor Hartke, Madison, Devin and Collin Magee, Dillon (Make’l) Hardiek, Reed (fiance, Erin) Hardiek, Lee Hardiek, Macy, Sara, Paige, Brittany Swingler, Kylie Hoelscher, Conner Hoelscher; great-granddaughter, Adalyn Hardiek; sisters, Phyllis Ann Niemerg and Marilyn Koebele; sisters-in-law, Jane (Jack) Zerrusen and Connie (Jerry) Thoele; brothers-in-law, Roger (Jackie) Niebrugge, Donnie Niebrugge and numerous nieces and nephews; special family friend and caregiver, Kayla Wright.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law; brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Rose Swingler, Gene and Eileen Swingler, Ralph Niemerg, George Koebele and David Niebrugge.
