Michael Perry Mulvey (79) of Newton

Michael Perry Mulvey, age 79, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 5:30 AM Monday, May 4 2020, at his home surrounded by his family.

Private family services will be held at the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois. Burial will be in the New St. Peter Cemetery, east of Newton, Illinois. Mike was born on July 14, 1940, at home in rural Jasper County, Illinois, the son of Woodrow and Helen (Dale) Mulvey. He married Peg (Brummer) of Island Grove, Illinois, on June 13th, 1970. Mike attended Newton Community High School, and graduated with the Class of 1958. While in school he played on the Apollo Conference championship football team. During that time, he was selected as an all-state kicker. He also played fast pitch softball for S&K Rigging in Arcola, Illinois, and for Casey Truckers, in Casey, Illinois. As a Casey Trucker, Mike was inducted into the Illinois ASA state hall of fame. Before joining the Army, he attended Southern Illinois University. Mike was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served from 1963 till 1965, in the United States Army. He was stationed overseas in Fischbach, Germany in the military police. He worked for the Newton Police Department before working for Brummer Wholesale for 29 years. He was employed by Lorenz Wholesale for over 15 years before retiring. Mike was a lifelong Democrat and an avid Illini and Chicago Cubs fan. A highlight of his life was when the Cubs won the 2016 World Series, and he attended the celebration parade. He also loved gardening, fishing, his dogs, and most of all spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Mike is survived by his wife of 49 (almost 50 years), his children Douglas (Kathie) Mulvey of O’Fallon, Missouri; Debra (Dan) Cozzo of Bloomingdale, Illinois; and Philip Mulvey of Champaign, Illinois. Mike also has six grandchildren, Adam, Ava and Zac Mulvey and Christopher, Benjamin, and Vincent Cozzo. Surviving siblings are brothers, Larry, Ronnie, Bill, and Paul Mulvey all of Newton, Illinois as well as Jack Mulvey of Liberty, Missouri. His surviving sisters include, Sharon Romack of Newton, Illinois; Betty Ganley of Decatur, Illinois; Barbara Mitchell and Sandy Pinter of Champaign, Illinois; and many other extended family members.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow and Helen Mulvey, brother Delano Mulvey and sister Rosemary Mulvey, as well as other immediate relatives.
