Vern L. “Pete” Scales, 93, of Greenup, IL passed away at 11:05 am Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, IL.

Graveside memorial services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday February 15 at the Greenup Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Cumberland County Veterans. The Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup, IL is assisting the family.

Pete was born on January 2, 1927 in Toledo, IL to Herschel and Mary Etta (Sherwood) Scales. He married Rosemary Seetes on April 7, 1953.

Surviving is his wife of nearly 67 years; son Dan (Linda) Scales; grandchildren Tasha (Shay) Shaffer, Matt (Tera) Scales, Dawn Scales, Bo Scales and Ashley Scales; 10 great grandchildren Shelby, Shaylee, Tyler, Meah, Wyatt, Jordan, Donovan, Montana, Tayven and Ky; and one great-great grandchild Skylar.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Clarence “Skeeter” Scales; daughter Peggy Lynn Bauguss; brothers Earl, Shay, Paul and Ralph; sisters Edna Wade, Leona Scales, Opal Closson, Mary Jane Jones, Francis Swank and Florence Sparks. Pete worked at Moore Farm Building in Charleston and Scotts Building Center in Greenup.

He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Greenup. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with grandkids.
