Leroy Schackmann, 65, of Newton died at 10:30am Sunday, October 20, 2019 at home, surrounded by his family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am Thursday, October 24, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton with Fr. Dean Probst offering Mass. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Newton.

LeRoy was born on January 4, 1954, in Olney, Illinois, one of eleven children of Joseph and Eunice (Ochs) Schackmann. He married Christine “Christy” (Holkenbrink) on October 6, 1979, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham, Illinois. He graduated from Newton Community High School in 1972. LeRoy was a hard worker his entire life and he never complained. LeRoy retired from Sherwin Williams in June 2018.

LeRoy was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.

LeRoy enjoyed Newton Eagle football, canoeing down the Embarrass River, jeep rides, and playing with grandkids. He is known for his big smile, positive attitude, and always lending a helping hand. He valued his family and did everything he could for them; it made him happy and content to have them near. He was a compassionate and caring husband, father, and grandpa. He exemplified his motto “Always Stay Humble and Kind”.

Wife of 40 years – Christy Schackmann of Newton, Illinois

Children - Travis (Chelsey) Schackmann of Hazel Dell, Illinois; Jessica (Adam) Beals of Jewett, Illinois and Andrea (Brett) Miller of Toledo, Illinois.

7 grandchildren Hannah, Haley and Hunter Schackmann; Audrey, Nathan and Emily Beals and Vivian Miller

Brothers Gerald (Diane), Keith (Sandra), Dave (Debra), Dan (Theresa), Mike (Annette) all of Newton, Illinois

Sisters Mary McDonald of Newton, Illinois; Sue (Tony) Thoele of Dieterich, Illinois; Eileen (Michael) Doss of Pensacola, Florida and Janice (Andrew) Dougherty of Effingham, Illinois

Sisters-in-law Carol (Jim) Hakman, Ellie (Gene) Niemerg, Jo (Mike) Bierman, Tess (Alan) Goeckner;

Brothers-in-law Frank (Julie) Holkenbrink, Henry (Pat) Holkenbrink,

many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Joe Schackmann, sister Irene, father and mother-in-law Henry and Dorothy Holkenbrink, and niece Julie Schackmann.
