David L. Baumgarten (76) of Stewardson

David L. “Bummy” Baumgarten, 76, passed away Wednesday evening, June 19, 2019 at his home in Stewardson, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 24 at New Hope Church in Effingham with burial in Stewardson Cemetery, Stewardson. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham. Casual dress is requested. Please feel free to wear International Red. David was born June 10, 1943 in Effingham, the son Elmer and Ruth (Webb) Baumgarten. He married Carol Bales on June 16, 1963.

David was a lifelong farmer and the police chief for the city of Stewardson for 43 years. He enjoyed drag racing, motorcycle riding, farming and tractor pulling and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandson.

David is survived by his wife, Carol of Stewardson; son, Tim (Bonnie) of Stewardson and daughter, Kristia (Ruel) Smith of Stewardson; grandchildren, Jake (Haley) Baumgarten, Cody (Sabrina) Friese, Whitney Smith and Kassidy Smith, all of Stewardson, Josh (Chelsea) Baumgarten of Strasburg; great-grandson, Rhett Baumgarten of Strasburg and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Louella Mathews; sisters-in-law, Melba Bales, Annabelle Bales, Pat Lading and Jan Schultz.

David will be sadly missed by his family and the many friends he has made over the years.
