Mary L. Schmitt, 81, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis, MO.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 21 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Effingham. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home with a 6:30 p.m. CCW rosary. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Church or St. Anthony Schools. Mary was born on August 19, 1937, in St. Francis Township, IL, the daughter of George and Louise (Goeckner) Willenborg.
Mary graduated from St. Anthony High School and then went on to obtain her Bachelor’s in Education from Eastern Illinois University. After years of teaching, Mary retired from Effingham Unit 40. She enjoyed playing cards, golfing, and bowling. Mary also loved to bake. She was a devoted member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women.
Mary is survived by her children, Randal (Melissa) Schmitt of Troy, Gregory (Krista) Schmitt of Newburgh, IN, Michael (Lisa) Schmitt of Effingham, Gary Schmitt of Springfield, and Kimberly (Paul) Garbe of Glen Carbon; grandchildren, David Schmitt, Brianna Schmitt, Morgan Schmitt, Jennifer (Kevin) Hampton, Rebecca Schmitt, Dana Schmitt, Kayla (Josh) Schultz, Michelle (Nick) Kronmiller, Ryan Schmitt, Derek Schmitt, Brooke Schmitt, Jessica Garbe, Alexander Garbe, and Justin Garbe; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers; and 8 sisters.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
