Carl D. Bruegger, 80 of Brownstown, died unexpectedly at 8:15 p.m. Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Brookstone Estates, Vandalia.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 12 at Gieseking Funeral Home, Brownstown with Harry Kirk officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Cemetery, rural Brownstown. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time. Memorials may be made to the Brownstown First Responders, Zion Cemetery or Shriners Hospital for Children.

Carl was born on Friday, May 27, 1938 in Brownstown, IL to Charles R. and Irma Mae (Jackson) Bruegger. He married Shirley A. Neathery on June 7, 1958 in Brownstown and she preceded him in death on May 9, 2009, having celebrated over 50 years of marriage. He was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed woodworking. He served with the Army Corps of Engineers and worked for the Fayette County Highway Department, Illinois Department of Transportation and retired from the Department of Corrections as farm superintendent after 27 years of service.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and special uncle and leaves behind; his daughter, Elizabeth ‘Beth’ Smith and her husband Ronnie; sister, Charlene Beckett of Blue Mound; sister-in-law, Jean Sefton of Port Orange, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and sister, Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Mae Delaney.
