Eric Charles Gurtner, 23, of Brownstown, IL passed away Thursday, December 20, 2018 at his home. Eric Charles Gurtner, 23, of Brownstown, IL passed away Thursday, December 20, 2018 at his home. 

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, December 28 at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church, Vandalia with Rev. Fr. Scott Snider officiating. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, St. Elmo. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 PM Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Brownstown First Responders, Mother of Dolors Catholic Church, or Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

Eric Charles Gurtner was born on November 20, 1995 in Effingham, IL, the son of Glenn Lloyd and Pamela Jean (Voils) Gurtner.

Eric graduated this past May from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Recently he had been helping out on his family farm, Gurtner Farms Inc., as well as traveling to Florida and Georgia to aid in the hurricane disaster relief efforts.

Eric had a passion for sports; both physically playing and watching professional leagues such as the St. Louis Cardinals and the Dallas Cowboys. He also had an avid love for hunting, fishing, and raising cattle. Eric was a member of Mother of Dolors Catholic Church. 

He is survived by his parents, Glenn and Pamela Gurtner of Brownstown; maternal grandmother, Dolores Hertz of Nokomis; brother, Lance Garza of Effingham; sister, Laura Gurtner of Brownstown; nieces, Angelea and Jacey Garza of Effingham; and several uncles, aunts, and cousins. 

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Lloyd Gurtner, Edith Gurtner, Enid Gurtner, and maternal grandfather Elisha Voils.
