Albert S. Johnstone, age 86 of south of Mulberry Grove, Illinois, passed away at 11:16 p.m. Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital North Campus.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at the Mulberry Grove Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Bays officiating. Interment will follow in Noffsinger Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Mulberry Grove Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home at 201 Pierce from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday December 10, 2012 with Masonic Services held at 7 p.m. Monday evening by the Mulberry Grove Masonic Lodge # 809 A.F. & A.M. For those who desire memorials may be made to the Tamalco Christian Church or to Shriner's Children’s Hospital. Friends may also call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. Tuesday until service time.

Albert Sidney Johnstone, the son of Wade Hampton Johnstone Sr. and Marie Margaret Mussmann Johnstone Swafford, was born on November 2, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of five the family moved to Pendleton, Missouri where Albert grew up and attended the One Room School there. In his youth the family moved to St. Louis where Albert was a bus boy and later did amateur boxing from The South Broadway Athletic Club becoming the St. Louis City Champion and boxed in the Golden Gloves Competition there. He graduated from High School in St. Louis and worked for the Railway Express for several years. In 1950 he joined the Terminal Rail Road where he became an Engineer working for 38 years, retiring in 1988. He had moved the family to rural Mulberry Grove in 1955 and farmed as well as being a Rail Road Engineer. In retirement he enjoyed farming, traveling, fishing, hunting and his family.

Albert and Violet Margaret Hoffman were united in marriage on May 17, 1946 in St. Louis and enjoyed over 66 years together. Violet survives as do their four children: Larry G. Johnstone, Richard A. Johnstone both or rural Mulberry Grove, Catherine (Milton) Smith of rural Mulberry Grove, Betty (Doug) Lawrence of rural Keyesport, three grandchildren: Amy Johnstone, Ashley Smith, Travis Lawrence, two great grandchildren: Jordyn Flood, Holly Dunn, and Albert's sister Kate Foreman of Wheeling, West Virginia.

Albert is preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers: Wade Hampton Johnstone Jr., Gabriel Floyd Johnstone, and William Preston Johnstone.

Albert was a member of the Bond County farm Bureau, the Bond County Shrine Club, the Mulberry Grove Masonic Lodge # 809, the White Shrine Ainad Temple of East St. Louis, Illinois and his Church, the Tamalco Christian Church.
