Lewis William ‘Bill’ Stine, 91 of Brownstown, died at 3:50 a.m. on Friday, October 27, 2017, at Fayette County Hospital Long Term Care, Vandalia.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 1 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, St. Peter with Rev. Ryan Meyer officiating. Burial with military rites by Brownstown VFW Post 9770 will follow at St. Peter Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Gieseking-Claggett Funeral Home, Brownstown. Memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Bill was born on Tuesday, March 23, 1926 in Brownstown to C.E. and Minnie (Bauer) Stine. He married Helene Mercier on April 20, 1947. She preceded him in death on September 22, 2012 after 65 years of marriage. He joined the Navy in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1947. He served on the U.S.S. Charles F. Hughes, a Benson-class destroyer. He was a bus driver for the Brownstown Community Unit School District #201 for 44 years; a farmer and mechanic at Zimmer Body Shop. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church; life member of VFW Post 9770; retired member of the Brownstown Fire Department.
Bill loved the Chicago Cubs; playing dominoes; bowling; and playing pinochle, especially with his Brookstone Estates family!!
He is survived by his daughters; Linda (Roger) Herrmann and Nancy (Mike) Kistler both of Brownstown: his grandchildren; Bruce Boaz, Jr. of Vandalia, Christina (Kevin) Kramer of Strasburg, Brian Herrmann of Effingham, John Herrmann of Effingham, and Wes Kistler of Brownstown: his great grandchildren; Jacob Kramer of Carbondale, Isaac Kramer of Strasburg, Stacy Boaz of Vandalia and Ashley Shewmake of Effingham: his sister-in-law Esther Stine of Brownstown and son-in-law Bruce Boaz, Sr. of Brownstown and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, daughter, Mary Boaz and 11 brothers and sisters.
