Raymond L. “Radar” Pals, 85, of Effingham, IL, passed away peacefully at home Thursday evening, October 19, 2017, surrounded by family and love.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 23 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart School, Sacred Heart Church, or Sarah Bush Lincolnland Hospice.

Raymond was born on February 9, 1932, in Teutopolis, IL, the son of Lawrence and Anna (Weishaar) Pals. Ray shared life with his bride, Betty Jean (Coates) Pals. They were married on October 31, 1953 and to this union seven children were born. Ray was a devoted Catholic and a member of Sacred Heart Parish and the Knights of Columbus. He was a self-employed Surge Dealer for forty years. Ray will forever be remembered as an ornery, reliable, the most loving and dependable husband, father, grandpa and “poppa”.

Ray is survived by his loving wife of sixty-four years, Betty Jean Pals of Effingham; children, Cynthia deceased (Chuck) Yocum of WV, Ronald (Melissa) Pals of Stillwater, OK, Larry Pals deceased, Tamela Hankins of Effingham, David (Delores) Pals of Beecher City, Bryan (Wendy) Pals of Effingham, and Cheryl Gephart of Effingham; grandchildren, Angie, Kendra, Kacie, Shelly, Kelly, Chelsey, Shelby, Sadie, Bailey, Jessica, Josh, Ethan, Shane, Brandon, Garrett ,and Casandra; 18 great-grandchildren; and brother, Robert (Nancy) Pals of Teutopolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Cynthia Yocum; son, Larry Pals; grandson, Adam Losh; and sisters, Loretta Isley and Elvera Faltemeier.
