Mrs. Alberta C. Smithenry, 95, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 5:07 p.m. Sunday, August 27, 2017 at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Effingham, Illinois.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 30 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton with Fr. Dean Probst celebrating mass.  Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Newton. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the church and one hour before the mass in church. In loving memory of Alberta, memorials may be made to the St. Thomas School or Church. Arrangements are under the care of the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton.

Alberta was born January 17, 1922, in Richland County, Illinois, the daughter of George and Minnie (Schmitt) Klingler. She married Glen B. “Tony” Smithenry on January 22, 1946, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Wendelin, Illinois, and preceded her in death March 30, 2007. Alberta was a homemaker, mother and farmer’s wife. She was a faithful member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton. Alberta enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.

Alberta is survived by children, Dean (wife Eileen) Smithenry of Newton; William “Bill” Smithenry of Newton; Mary Jane (husband John) Klotz of Indianapolis, Indiana;  John (wife Judy) Smithenry of Newton,; Tom (wife Kathy) Smithenry of Oblong; Glenda (husband Don) Spiker of Lis and Rita (husband Mark) Buerster of Wendelin; grandchildren, Sheryl (husband Brian) Brummer, Lisa (husband Daniel) Holland, Katie Smithenry, Danielle (husband Andrew) Fiega, Sara and Leanne Smithenry, Eric (wife Maria) Spiker, Scott (wife Amy) Spiker, Nichole (husband Kevin) Lidy, Kristen (husband Matthew) Kabbes, Stacy (husband Daniel) Baker, Andy Buerster; Holly (husband Kyle) Nettleton and Leslie Titsworth; several great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Georgia Klingler and Eva Klingler both of Olney and brother-in-law Johnny (wife Romonna) Ochs of Ste. Marie.

Alberta was preceded in death by her husband, sons, James and Daniel Smithenry, sister, Dorothy Ann Ochs, brothers, Lawrence and LeRoy Klingler and sister-in-law, Lueva Klingler.
