Bernie Thompson, 81 of rural Neoga, Illinois, passed away at 11:55 P.M. Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at his residence.

As per the wishes of Mr. Thompson his body will be cremated and a Memorial Service will be held at a later date. The Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home of Neoga, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials to the donor's choice.

He was born February 4, 1936, in Mattoon Township, Coles County, Illinois, the son of Albert and Alpha Marie (Rumley) Thompson. He married Peggy Donley, February 14, 1955, in Coles County, Illinois. Bernie was a member of the Broadway Christian Church in Mattoon, Illinois and a retired groundskeeper at Lake Land College also of Mattoon. He was a former Boy Scout Leader and a former Little League Coach, both of Neoga, and he enjoyed camping, but his greatest joy and love was his family and grandchildren.

Bernie leaves his wife after sixty-two years of marriage, Peggy Thompson of rural Neoga, IL; one son, Bernie Thompson (Pam) of Neoga, IL; one Daughter, Cindy Gibbons (Dennis) of Lerna, IL; five grandchildren, Val Harvey, Hope Salvas, Shelly Kidd, Shawn Davis and Julie Abitz; twelve great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Fred and Steve Thompson; one grandson, Bernie Thompson, Jr.
