Eugene H. Meyer (88) of Effingham

Eugene H. Meyer, 88, died Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 8:05 a.m. at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Effingham.
A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 3 at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Green Creek, with burial in the church cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to time of service Thursday morning at the church. Memorial donations may be made to Donor’s Choice. Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham is assisting the family with arrangements.

Eugene was born January 12, 1929 in Effingham, the son of John H. and Theresa (Waldhoff) Meyer. He married Jeanie Miller on January 13, 1951. Eugene served with the United States Army during the Korean War, but seldom spoke of those experiences. He was a member of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Green Creek. Eugene was a builder of many homes, including his own brick ranch in Green Creek, referred to as “Jeanie’s Palace”, by Jeanie’s Effingham relatives. As part of Grunloh Construction Company, he was also key to the building of many structures including schools, churches, post offices, banks and even a tornado proof structure in Pana. Gene and Jeanie (a.k.a. “The Pair of Jeans”) were musical entertainers for many years in the Effingham area and also in their Florida retirement community where they spent 18 consecutive winters.
Eugene is survived by his six children, Wendy Meyer (Wayne Neese) of Charleston, Stan (Darlene) Meyer of Altamont, Melody Dougan of Mulberry, AR, Steve (Collette) Meyer of Bishop Creek, Cheryl Simon of Chatham and Tom (Sally) Meyer of Watson; thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; brother, Fred (Marilyn) Meyer of Teutopolis, sisters, Theresa Meinhart of Dieterich, Annie (Virgil) Kingery of Effingham and Lucille (Larry) Buehnerkemper of Teutopolis; sister-in-law, Joan Meyer of Sigel.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant son, Kevin Meyer; brothers, Lawrence, Louis, John, James and Gerald; sister, Catherine Thoele; sons-in-law, Robert Dougan and David Simon.
