Richard A. Herzing, 88, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 5:40 P.M. Friday, May 19 at Mount Vernon Countryside Manor in Mount Vernon, Illinois with family by his side.

He was born September 26, 1928 in Dahlgren, Illinois to parents Louis J. and Clara (Rubenacker) Herzing. Richard married Lucille Schuster on June 17, 1954 in Piopolis, Illinois. They were blessed with 63 years of marriage.

A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, May 23 at 10:00 A.M. at Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois with The Very Reverend Father John Iffert officiating. Interment will follow at Saint Mary Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois. The American Legion Post #141 will conduct Full Military Honors at the cemetery. A Visitation will be held Monday from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. At conclusion of the visitation, there will be a Rosary Service.

Richard is survived by his wife, Lucille Herzing of Mount Vernon, Illinois; children, Michael Herzing and wife, Robin of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Mark Herzing and wife, Tina of Effingham, Illinois, Nancy Wilson and husband, Monty of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Karen Williams and husband, Tommy of Mount Vernon, Illinois, and Paula Szczepanski and husband, Terry of DuBois, Illinois; grandchildren, Sara Hapeman Parrish and husband, T.J. Parrish, Kayla Herzing, and Matthew Herzing; great-grandchildren, Riley Parrish, Max Parrish, and Marlow Parrish; step-grandchildren, John Paul Williams and wife, Tiffany, Kiplea Williams, and Tobbie Cochrane and husband, Darin, Michelle Ashby, and Amie King; step-great-grandchildren, Jake, Andrew, Devon, Taylor, Sam, Brittany, Darian, Maddie, Colleen, and Andrew; step-great-great-grandchildren, Lea and Malakai; siblings, Bill Herzing of Dahlgren, Illinois and Betty Tanner of Hurst, Texas; sister-in-law, Lorene Zachman and husband, Eddie of Decatur, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; two sisters; and step-great-granddaughter, Danielle Felty.

Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army. He worked for the Illinois State Police Department for 28 years until retirement in 1986. He also worked for St. Mary School and Cemetery for 10 years. After retirement, Richard assisted his son, Mike, at Herzing Construction for over 30 years. Richard was a member of Saint Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois, American Legion Post #141, Illinois Police Association, Fraternal Order of Police, AmVets, National Rifle Association,  Retired State Police Association, and V.F.W. #9233. He enjoyed Friday night singing and dancing with his wife at Ina Community Center for many years. Richard’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
