Katherine C. "Kay" McDonald, 90, of Springfield died at 11:26am Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 1 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 245 N. Amos St., Springfield. Visitation will be from 4-7pm Sunday at the church. Burial will be in St. Norbert Cemetery in Hardin, IL at 2pm Monday. Memorials to the Holy Family Food Pantry.

Kay was born January 22, 1927 in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of Charles A. and Neil Pauline Maguolo Boggiano. She married James V. McDonald in 1953, He served as Teutopolis Superintendent of Schools from 1976 to 1978. He preceded her in death in 1978. Kay graduated from Visitation Academy High School in St. Louis, then attended St. John's School of Nursing in 1947, and graduated from St. Louis University in 1950. She worked at DePaul Hospital School of Nursing from 1950-53 and later worked at Springfield Medical Group and the Loretta Home at the Franciscan Motherhouse. Kay dedicated her life to faith, family and service to others. Kay was recognized by the Springfield Diocese Catholic Charities as Volunteer of the Year. She was co-founder of the St. John's Hospital Grief Support Group and did weekly volunteer work for Holy Family Food Pantry for more than 25 years. Kay was also a volunteer for Right to Life, the St. Agnes Church Prayer Line, Caregiver Interfaith Volunteer Services (CIVS), the Bereavement Support Group at St. Agnes, St. Louis Archdiocese Council of Catholic Nurses, LLCC Academy of Lifelong Learning, and Villa East Nursing Home in Sherman. In addition, she was a member of Catholic Charities and Catholic Daughters of America and a Samaritan at St. John's Hospital. Kay enjoyed reading, gardening and bird-watching, knitting, crosswords, and Cardinal baseball and assisted The Legacy Theater with costume production.

Kay is survived by her sons, Jim McDonald of Lafayette, Louisiana, John (Rosie) McDonald of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, Mike (Gena) McDonald of Effingham, Joe (Elizabeth) McDonald of Pleasant Plains, Paul (Mindy) McDonald of Springfield, and Matt McDonald of Seattle, Washington; daughters, Mary McDonald of Springfield, Betty (Steve) Ring of Springfield, Patty (Steve) Renschen of St. Louis, Missouri, Ruth and Joan both of Sterrett, Alabama and Teri (Dennis) Wells of St. Louis, Missouri; 18 grandchildren, including Andy, Jeni, Megan and Nate McDonald; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ellen (Wallace) Bourneuf of St. Louis, Missouri; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kay was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Charles F. Boggiano.
