Virginia Catherine Marshall, age 96, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 10:24 PM - Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM – Saturday, April 8 at the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois, with Scott Wagy officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton, Illinois. Visitation will be held 2 hours before the service. In loving memory of Virginia, memorials may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church.

Virginia was born on February 18, 1921, in Newton, Illinois, the daughter of Joy and Dodie (Williams) Wagy. She married Marvin D. Marshall on October 16, 1941, in Newton, Illinois, and he preceded her in death on October 20, 2000. Virginia graduated from Newton Community High School in 1939. She worked at the People’s State Bank in Newton for 8 years and then went to work at the Newton Grade School as the treasurer, where she worked for several years. Virginia was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Newton, Illinois, Newton Jr. Women’s Club – Past President, Newton VFW Ladies Auxiliary – Past President, BPEW Club – Past President and a former member of the Newton Public Library Board. Virginia enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing cards, bingo, dominos, bridge and golfing.

Virginia is survived by: Daughter – Peggy (Jerry)_Swisher of St. Joseph, Illinois; Grandchildren – Kevin (Lisa) Eckel of Bloomington, Illinois, David (Benita) Swisher of St. Joseph, Illinois, Mike (Stacy) Swisher of Tolono, Illinois; Great Grandchildren – Kyle Swisher (Skyeler LaFoe), Madelynn Swisher, Emma Swisher, Cody Eckel and Collin Eckel; Great Great Granddaugher – Raelyn Swisher; Sister – Joyce Webb of Newton, Illinois; Sister-in-law – Rowena Wagy of Newton, Illinois.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter and son-in-law Trudy and Kenny Eckel, grandson Tracey Eckel and her brother Victor Wagy.
