Esther M. Bugenhagen (95) of Shumway

Esther Martha Bugenhagen, 95, formerly of Shumway passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Stewardson with Reverend David Weaver officiating and burial will be in the Stewardson Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Wednesday at Brummerstedt Funeral Home in Stewardson, and from 9 to 10am Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Stewardson.

Esther was born June 20, 1921 in Prairie Township, Shelby County the daughter of Martin and Anna Schmitt Rincker. She married Fred August Bugenhagen on December 21, 1947 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Strasburg with Reverend G.A Lueck officiating. Esther was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stewardson where she was very active in the Ladies Aid and sang in the choir for nearly 34 years. She was a graduate of Stewardson High School in 1939 and Sparks Business College in Shelbyville in 1940. Esther was a farm wife and loving homemaker for her family. Formerly, she was employed in the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Shelby County Treasurers Office beginning in 1963. She also helped as a volunteer at the Lutheran Care Center in Altamont for 15 years.
Surviving are her daughter Kay Allen and husband Melvin of Mattoon; sons: Fred Martin Bugenhagen and wife Becky of Calhan, CO; Paul Bugenhagen and wife Gloria of Stewardson; daughter-in-law Sandy Bugenhagen of Mode; three grandchildren: Andy Bugenhagen, Luke Bugenhagen and Phillip Bugenhagen; four step grandchildren; 14 step great-grandchldren; five step great-great-grandchildren; and a sister Eva Schultz of Stewardson.
She was preceded in death by husband Fred, a son Carl, her parents and brother Leo Rincker and his wife Mabel, Waldo Rincker and wife Helen and sister Mabel Perkinton and husband Robert.
