Carol Anne Utz, 78, of Effingham, IL, passed away at 12:37 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017, at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, surrounded by her family.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 25 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Effingham. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Fourth Street, Effingham with a 7:00 p.m. C.C.W. rosary to follow visitation. Memorials may be made in loving memory of Carol to Sacred Heart School in Effingham.

Carol was born on December 15, 1938, in Bloomington, IL, the daughter of Ralph and Dorothy (Dodge) Beyer. She married Robert F. Utz on September 3, 1960, and he survives.

Carol graduated from St. Anthony Hospital School of Nursing in Terre Haute, Indiana with a degree in nursing in 1959. She worked at St. Anthony Hospital and the County of Effingham. While raising her children, she attended St. Mary-of-the-Woods College attaining a history degree and then attended Eastern Illinois University where she received her elementary teacher’s certification. She taught at Sacred Heart School for 23 years retiring in 2000. Carol was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham.

Carol’s main interests were teaching children, reading books, and spoiling her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was an inspiration to all those who worked with her and her family. In true mom fashion, she gathered all seventeen grandchildren and three of her great-grandchildren to her side for final advice and hugs.

Carol is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert F. Utz of Effingham; children, Robert J. (Tammy) Utz of Effingham, Julie A. (Paul) Meinhart of Wheeler, Linda M. Workman of Effingham, and William G. Utz of Effingham; grandchildren, Jaclyn (Anthony) Jansen, Casey Utz, Kourtney Utz, Kelli Utz, Matthew Dust, Daniel (Jen) Dust, Jennifer Dust, Lindsay (Nathan) Niemerg, Lauren Workman, Katelyn Workman, Ashley Workman, Keri (Quinn) Thoele, Anna Utz, Greg Utz, Luke Utz, Jake Utz, and Eric Utz; great-grandchildren, Michael, Robert, Charles, Olivia, Thomas, and Alaina; siblings, Richard (Grace) Beyer of Landisville, PA, Judi (Dale Heitman) Macklin of Watson, and Margie (Mike) Brewer of Bethany.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
