Diamond Francis Powell, 88, of Carmi, passed away at 10:58 P.M. Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Deaconess VNA Hospice in Evansville, IN.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, October 13 at C & A Pagel Funeral Home in St. Elmo, Illinois. Burial will be in Griffith Cemetery in Brownstown, IL. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi and 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. on Thursday at C & A Pagel Funeral Home in St. Elmo. Memorial contributions may be made in Diamond's memory to the charity of your choice. Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of local arrangements.

Diamond was born on March 11, 1928 in Otego Township, Fayette County, Illinois, the daughter of William Mason and Rachel (Carter) Cox. Diamond married Grail Vernon Powell on August 14, 1944. He preceded her in death on September 13, 2006. She was a housewife. She was a member of First Christian Church in St. Elmo where she once served as a Sunday School teacher. Diamond was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary in Carmi, VFW poppy chairman and for 10 years, managed the kitchen for the Carmi VFW.

Diamond is survived by three daughters, Sandra Dawes (husband Philip) of Evansville, IN, Diana Hickman of Lockport, IL, and Luann Buchanan of Carmi; a brother Wilbert Cox (wife Margarett) of Salem, IL; a sister Genine Rhodes (husband Darel) of St. Elmo; 10 grandchildren, 1 step-grandson, 27 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Rachel Cox; two brothers, Leo Dwight Cox and William Marvin Cox; two sisters, Leota Mae Case and Roxie Ellen Naab; two son-in-laws, John Hickman and Danny Buchanan; a great-granddaughter Emma Camille Dawes.
