Larry Xon “Barney” Barnes, 80, of Effingham, Illinois passed away Sunday, September 11, 2016, at his home surrounded by his loving family and caregivers.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 15 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Effingham, with military rites. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service at Johnson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Fourth Street, in Effingham. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Larry was born on November 1, 1935, in Effingham, IL, the son of Jack S. and Florence (Noot) Barnes. He married Barbara A. O’Donnell on December 30, 1954 in Corinth, MS, and she survives. Barney was a family man. After serving in the United States Army, he came home to help operate B&H Clothing, the family business in downtown Effingham. After completing college at Centralia Community College and Sparks Business College, he pursued and retired from his career of 37 years at the National Fire Safety Council. His career allowed him to travel across the U.S. with his wife and children from time to time. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Effingham Country Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, family cookouts, playing cards with friends, the Chicago Cubs, and had quite the collection of beer steins.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Barbara A. Barnes of Effingham; children, Craig X. Barnes, Dana M. (Jerry) Dittamore, and Mark C. Barnes; grandchildren, Ashley, Tanner, and Layton; great-grandchildren, Zoe, Addison, Zaiden, and Oliver.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles “Pete” and Eileen O’Donnell; brother, James Barnes; sister, Joyce (Bob) Willenborg; great-grandson, Tucker; and grandson, Nicholas C. Barnes.
