Doris J. Dempsey, 88 of Effingham, passed away at 2:10 p.m. Thursday, August 11, 2016 at H.S.H.S. St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 15 at First Baptist Church in Effingham with burial in Oakridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham and for one hour prior to funeral service Monday morning at the church. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Doris was born June 3, 1928 in Salem, the daughter of Virgil and Opal (Smith) Ivy. She married Paul W. Dempsey on August 6, 1948 and he survives. Doris received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and her teaching certificate from Southern Illinois University - Carbondale. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Effingham, where she volunteered with Vacation Bible School and Sunday School. Music was a big part of Doris’ life. She was a pianist, enjoyed singing in the church choir and had even received a French Horn Scholarship in school. Over the years, Doris tutored several children, was involved in missions and loved to travel.

Doris is survived by her husband, Paul of Effingham; two daughters, Cindy (Tony) Deters and Edith “Eydie” (Tim) Carruthers, both of Effingham; son, Steven Dempsey of Effingham; seven grandchildren, Josh (Lora) Dempsey, Jeremy Cox, Joe Esker, Megan (Jerrod) Wilson, Lauren (Reid) Ackerman, Matthew Deters and Sarah Deters; three great-grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Debbie Esker; brother, Tom Ivy and granddaughter, Michelle Reeves.
