Richard R. ‘Dick’ Powell, Jr., 53, of Brownstown died unexpectedly on Sunday, May 1, 2016 in Oswego, New York.

Visitation will begin with a Masonic Service at 1:00 p.m. and will conclude at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 14 at Gieseking-Claggett Funeral Home, Brownstown. A Graveside service will follow at Liberty Cemetery, rural Brownstown, with Pee Wee Denton officiating and military honors provided by VFW Post #9770 of Brownstown. Memorials are requested to be made to the family and will be accepted at the funeral home on their behalf and at P.O. Box 189, Brownstown, IL 62418.

Richard Robert Powell, Jr. was born on Sunday, April 14, 1963 in Vandalia, IL to Richard R., Sr. and Henrietta Sue (Christianson) Powell. He proudly served in the US Navy aboard the USS Enterprise and attained the rank of EM3. On Saturday July 23, 1994 he married Penny Sue Bourke at the Bridal Cave in Camdenton, Missouri, and she preceded him in death on December 16, 2011. Dick was an independent MOV Test Engineer and was affiliated with Teledyne Technologies, Inc. as a subcontractor having worked in the nuclear field domestically and abroad. He was of the Christian faith and a member of the VFW Post #9770 of Brownstown, Altamont Masonic Lodge #533 and was an Ainad Shriner.

Dick is survived by; son, Seth Owen Powell; daughter, Shelby Lynn Powell, both at home in Brownstown; mother, Sue Powell of Stewardson; sisters, Alicia Ballinger of Stewardson and Angela Powell (Roy Painter) of Toledo; uncles, Nelson (Carolyn) Powell of Brownstown and Doyle (Teresa) Powell of Vandalia; brothers-in-law, Bill (Dianna) Bourke of Oconee and Mike Bourke of Houston, TX; mother-in-law, Barbara Bourke of Houston, TX ; niece, Brittany Ballinger of Stewardson; nephews, Andre Powell of Mattoon and Sammy Painter of Toledo; close friend and nanny, Lola Rhodes of Brownstown; special friend, Melinda Van De List of St. Elmo and many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by: grandparents; father; wife; father-in-law, Clarence ‘Butch’ Bourke; brother, Grant Powell; and aunt, Mary Powell Crook.
