Larry Wayne Shafer, 74, of Greenup, IL passed at 7:30 am on Monday, April 4, 2016 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Friday, April 8 at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup, Illinois with Military Rites. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday evening at the funeral chapel. Honoring his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded following his services. Memorials may be made to the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation, 1004-A O'Reilly Ave. San Francisco, CA  94129, in honor of his son Doug or to Nancy Shafer. Donations made to Nancy will go to the nurses working in the ICU to purchase extra items for patient’s needs.

Larry was born on December 31, 1941 in Charleston, Illinois; the son of Leonard W. and Dorothy (Updegraff) Shafer. He married Nancy Brandenburg on January 11, 2001. She survives. Also surviving is son Douglas Wayne Shafer of Greenup; sister Bobbie (Jim) Walsh of Atlanta, GA; step-son Scott (Allison) Perryman of Lakeland, FL; grandchildren Brett (Dara) Livvix of Dickinson, ND, Dalton (girlfriend Courtney Wallace) Livvix of Charleston, IL, Mason Perryman of FL; great grandson Lane Livvix of ND; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sons Ryan and Jeffrey Shafer.

Shafer was an entrepreneur. In high school, he began working for Everett Horn at the Sale Barn which sparked his interest in the hog business. He, in partnership with Everett Horn then started Horn & Shafer, west of Toledo. After getting out of the hog business, he and his wife Nancy owned and operated The Stockyards Restaurant in Greenup for many years. Never retiring and always working, Shafer drove a daily route picking up and dropping off mail, did deliveries for Dust & Sons, and most recently, helped out on Holsapple Farms. In his spare time, he enjoyed working outside in his yard with Nancy, golfing and cooking and spending time with his family and friends. Shafer’s personality, sense of humor and quick wit made lasting impressions on all who knew him. He was a member of the National Guard, a member and past commander of The Toledo American Legion, and the Charleston Elks.
