Oliver W. Emmerich age 99 of Wheeler, Illinois passed away Sunday, March 20, 2016 at the Newton Care Center, Newton, Illinois.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 28 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Island Grove with Fr. Joseph Carlos celebrating the mass. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with a 6:00 p.m. prayer service. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery with military rites by Dieterich Post No. 628 of the American Legion. Memorial gifts in honor of Oliver may be made to the American Heart Association or to the donor’s choice.

Oliver was born on October 28, 1916 in Jasper County, Illinois the son of Andrew and Anna R. (Meinhart) Emmerich. During WWII, Oliver served his country in the United States Army as a tank driver and his unit’s official barber. His unit saw combat in Northern Africa and Italy. On January 10, 1945, Oliver married Anna Clara Jansen. She preceded him in death on April 21, 1992. He spent his life as a livestock and grain farmer. His memberships include St. Isidore Parish, Men’s Sodality, Dieterich Post 628. Through the years, Oliver served as 4-H leader for the L&W Boys, ASCS Board, North Muddy Township Supervisor, North Muddy School Board, and as accessor. Being a forward thinker, Oliver supported the implementation of the R.E.A. and E-J Water. After his 80th birthday, Oliver was proud to have earned his GED. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed raising strawberries. He loved reading especially books on history and geography.

Oliver will be loved and remembered by his sons, Mike (Susan) Emmerich of Robinson, Steve (Julie) Emmerich of Petersburg, IL, Stan (Candy) Emmerich of Magnolia, TX, and Ed (Maria Virginia) Emmerich of Effingham; daughters, Janet Miller of Newton and Alice (Tim) Addis of Newton; twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren, and three great great-grandchildren; sister Teresa Willenborg of Decatur; sisters-in-law Angela Jansen of Teutopolis and Ruth Jansen of Effingham and numerous nieces and nephews.

His parents, wife Anna, children Phil Emmerich and Martha Emmerich-Dhom, brothers, Andrew, Vincent, Franklin, Ralph, Eugene, Edward, and Bob, sisters, Evelyn, Helen, Anna Maria, Margaret, Blanche, and Judy preceded him in death.
