Alfred “Pete” Reed, 93, of Shumway, passed away at 12:18 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Graveside services with military rites will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 7 at Arborcrest Memorial Park in Effingham, with the Rev. Robert Tucker officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Fourth Street, Effingham. Memorials may be made in loving memory of Pete to the Beecher City American Legion Post 535.

Alfred was born on September 30, 1922, in Loudon Township, IL, the son of Cleve and Kathryn (Durbin) Reed. He married Wilma L. Ashenbremer in Effingham County, IL. Pete served in the European Theater during WW II as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. His first combat jump was at Salerno, Italy. He then served in the 325th Glider Infantry at Normandy and Operation Market Garden. He was also at the Battle of the Bulge. Pete received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Beecher City American Legion Post 535. Pete was a lifetime farmer, school bus driver, and a carpenter. He love gardening and working on projects around his home.

Pete is survived by his wife, Wilma of Shumway; children, Pat (Larry) Neihls of Beecher City, Dave (Karrie) Reed of Shumway, and Betty Jo Reed of Shumway; 5 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Lori; brothers, Joe, Gene, Preslie, Leslie, Ray, and Steven; sister, Madonna; and 2 sisters in infancy.
