Louis C. “Louie” Hankins, 78, of Shumway, IL, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2016, at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 20 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Shumway, with the Rev. Christopher Hale officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Shumway, with military rites. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Johnson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Fourth Street in Effingham. Memorials may be made in loving memory of Louie to Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Shumway.

Louis was born on February 21, 1937, in Summit Township, IL, the son of Russell W. and Imogene (Wildridge) Hankins. He married Lois L. Fulteon August 4, 1973, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Shumway. Louie proudly served in the United States Air Force. He drove a semi for McBride’s Express and later he and Lois started Louie’s Cartage in Effingham and then opened Louie’s Country Corner in 1987. They retired in 1999. Louie was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Shumway where he served on the church council and the cemetery committee for many years. He was also a member of the Effingham American Legion, VFW, and DAV.

Louie is survived by his wife, Lois of Shumway; children, Mike (Darla) Hankins of Shumway, Charley Hankins, Lisa Hankins, Sherri (Steve) Dust, all of Effingham, Debbie (Kevin) Garretson of Mattoon, Cindy (Jim) Doty of Shumway, and Rich Fulte of Effingham; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Forrest Hankins of Shumway; and one sister, Irene Barnick of Monticello.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles R. Hankins; and sister-in-law, Evelyn Hankins.
