A local man has been sentenced to five years in prison for aggravated battery for injuries he inflicted on a child.
25-year-old Kevin Hazlett of Altamont Thursday pleaded guilty to the aggravated battery in exchange for the five-year sentence and the dismissal of a Class X felony count of aggravated battery of a child.
Hazlett is charged with causing abdominal injuries to the girl, who is the daughter of his former girlfriend. The child was 2-1/2 years old at the time of the incident last May 9.
Effingham County State's Attorney Ed Deters said the child has completely recovered physically from the injuries she received, and noted that the child was too young to testify in the matter.
Hazlett will be placed on the violent offender against youth list for 10 years after his release from prison. His bond posted on a 2010 criminal case involving counts of mob action and aggravated battery was transferred to cover medical bills from treatment of injuries received by the child.
