Kendall Balding has resigned as Altamont police chief.
Altamont Mayor Larry Taylor said of Balding, "He brought in his resignation today, effective yesterday." Taylor said the Altamont City Council discussed the matter in closed session.
Alan Heiens, a member of the Altamont police force, has been named Acting Chief.
Taylor said the Council would accept applications for the chief's position, and said the current members of the Altamont force are welcome to apply. He said there is no timetable for when they hope to have a new chief in place.
Taylor said he feels the city is still adequately staffed. Altamont has four fulltime police officers and three or four part-time officers. The mayor said the Effingham County Sheriff's Department has indicated they would assist if necessary.
