Leaders representing Eastern Illinois University and its faculty union, University Professionals of Illinois (Local 4100), have announced that a tentative agreement has been reached between the two parties.
A public summary of the four-year contract is expected to be released in the future. The agreement must first be submitted to the faculty and then to Eastern’s Board of Trustees for ratification; that, most likely, will occur in late summer/early fall after faculty members return to the university for the new school year.
Grant Sterling, chief negotiator for UPI, and Amie Calvert, chief negotiator for Eastern’s administration, said the agreement was reached following an all-day meeting on Saturday, July 7.
The agreement was reached using interest-based bargaining negotiation techniques, facilitated by Conrad Bowling of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. Negotiations began on Feb. 22, 2012, and included 19 scheduled sessions.
According to Sterling and Calvert, the tentative agreement was reached prior to the current agreement’s expiration date for the first time in decades.
The current agreement expires on Aug. 31, 2012. The new tentative agreement covers the period Sept. 1, 2012, through Aug. 31, 2016.
