Jeff Schafer, the long-time girls basketball and boys golf coach at Effingham High School, was the guest speaker at the meeting of the Effingham Noon Rotary Club September 4.
Schafer was the guest of his father, Rotarian Bill Schafer, to give an overview of his two squads.
The boys golf season is underway and Schafer is optimistic for a good season, although he cautions that he has a very young squad.
The girls basketball team is another matter. Even though he'll be replacing three-year point guard Kelli Utz and other key components from last season's squad, Schafer has nine players returning that were significant parts of last year's team that won 26 games.
The Rotary student guest was Shayla Bozdech, the daughter of Matt and Tammy Bozdech and a senior at Effingham High School where among other duties she serves as a band major for the Marching Hearts Red Regiment.
